Busted

The glass on my table on the deck exploded today for some reason..... Then I did some research....

Target is selling spontaniously combusting table tops.

I'm pissed. Glass was EVERYWHERE. I'm going to call Target tomorrow and see if they'll do something to make it right. I doubt it.

Tempered glass basically has lots of stress baked into it to make it stronger, and to make it explode into millions of little pieces when it breaks, so you don't get big shards of jagged glass flying all over. Good luck with Target doing something to make it right. They'll tell you to return it for another spontaneously exploding table. And they'll sell you a broom to sweep up the glass.

Well - If they'll let me return it and exchange it for another exploding table, I'll do it. I think I can reinforce the underside with lots of duct-tape. That way I won't have to buy a broom.

Even if it's covered in duct-tape, it can still explode. The cheap metal frame twists easily (remember, it DOESN'T have the stress baked-in!), and the glass twists with it. When it twists too far - it splodes!

If I cover it completely in duct tape on the top and on the bottom, mummify it in duct tape, I think I'll be safe.

You can add as much duct tape as you want, but it won't help, because THE STRESS IS BAKED-IN, DAMMIT!!!!!!
